First of all a BIG thank you for posting this manual. I followed your instructions step by step and it worked out of the box. DVD display with mplayer-vaapi was also fine.

What IMHO is missing in the README of the mplayer-vaapi package is a
sudo apt-get install libva-dev
but this was easy to find out.

In my case the sound driver did not need to be explicitly specified (better: must not in order to hear any sound):
mplayer -cache 8192 -alang en -slang en -vo vaapi \
-dvd-device /u90/vobdata/Flyboys/ dvd://1

The only thing I am still missing is video output with Skype. The camera works (at least my colleagues tell me so ) but I do not see them (the display of their video stream on my PC). Hopefully it is just a matter of time.

Thanks for pointing out. Maybe I had installed it before manually or build-dep mplayer fetched it for me, I actually don't know...

Skype by default uses xv which is currently broken on psb. I wouldn't count on it being fixed that soon. However, psb is still being developed and in the last few days there haven some patches being pushed into psb. The upgrade broke my system, but a clean install worked. Don't know what has been fixed and what not; I currently have no time to investigate psb-issues...

Uuuuh, I detected another (IMHO big) problem. Thunderbird is unusuable, tons of redraw problems. It starts with entering the master password, but even after entering it 'blind' the app is not usuable.

Thunderbird issues are know to the devs and as far as I know they are already fixed. I will check this and provide a link later...

update: No, the problem is confirmed, but not fixed:

Thunderbird is still broken, even with the latest version from the mozilla PPA. Did you ever figure out what was wrong?

Unfortunately no, i haven't found the problem yet.

Unrelated to the thunderbird issue:

Hi, I am the one managing the PPA. I recently added a newer version from the psb-kernel-source from the gma500 repository.
But upgrading can indeed give trouble.

You should first purge psb-kernel-source (sudo aptitude purge psb-kernel-source)
and after this you should install the new psb-kernel-source (sudo aptitude install psb-kernel-source).

Well, at least with the upgrade I was lucky, no problem upgrading to the new sources.

Hi,

I'm also suffering from the black screen on boot issue. Have a Samsung TV connected over HDMI.

starting recovery console and modprobing psb does indeed give a high rez console, so that far it seems to be working.

What is abit odd is that the psb kernel module doesn't seem to have been loaded on normal boot. (ie not listed with lsmod when connecting to system over ssh when it's blocked at black screen).

at that point modprobing psb doesn't error and screen blinks onece and i get the following in dmesg, but still black screen.

What is odd here is a few things. "non TV is attaced" it is a tv and the failure to read EDID (which is read correctly in xorg log).


Any ideas?

okey one step forward..

making sure "/etc/initramfs-tools/modules" contains psb and then running "update-initramfs -u" gave me something on screen instead of black screen. It now displays parts of the plymuth loader i think. Just the text thou.

And vt switching seems to work, atleast to vt 1. But X still refuses to play along.

I think xorg is actually crashing mid startup. By adding Option "NoDDC" to my xorg, it seems to continue to start up, but i get nothing on screen.

Probably not selecting a valid mode for the TV even thou i did add a proper modeline for it.

okey.. here is why it crashes with ddc enabled.. (found by a manual startx, doesn't show in log)
