Should be something like
apt-get install xdm
and afterwards according to http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=121656
place /usr/bin/xdm in /etc/X11/default-display-manager
Another way could be to remove gdm (this is what I did), but I'm not sure if the rest of gnome is depending on gdm. I'm using KDE...

Re: System hangs in gdm splash screen
Hi Denis, just saw the update from the fit-pc repository and updated.
Could you please update what's new and what bug fixes does this new driver provide? On a quite different subject, why isn't the fit-pc repository authenticated?

Re: System hangs in gdm splash screen
Thanks for making the new IEGD packages. It has sped up firefox scrolling and also removed the black artefacts. However mplayer-vaapi needs to be updated as well
to link to the new libraries. In particular it fails to run since the files
libva-x11-0.31.0.4.so.1
libva-glx-0.31.0.4.so.1
libva-0.31.0.4.so.1
are no longer present. I did a ln -s to the version 0.31.0.6 versions to this, but is is probably not as clean as one would like.
