Here's a question my supplier (distributor) could not handle and referred me to this forum:

I bought an Intense Value and the 4E/4USB FACE unit.

After installing the FACE unit, the ethernet interfaces are not recognized in FreeBSD; the 82583V chips have been supported for years.

Also, when enumerating the PCI bus I simply don't see the devices on the bus; listing the PCI bus with original FACE plate or with 4E face plate gives the same results; see below.

My questions:

Is there a BIOS setting that enables/disables the pciE bus that these devices use?
Is it a hardware problem (I suspect so)?
In the CPU or in the FACE module? (the FACE module was shipped separately and wasn't shipped in a metallic ESD bag)

Hi,
To verify if it's hardware or software problem please run some recent Linux LiveUSB/CD, for example LM15 http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=138.
Just check if all eth ifaces are recognized.

Tried mint and confirmed that the interfaces aren't seen there either.

Didn't come as a surprise because if the devices cannot be seen in PCI config space, then drivers won't be able to find them either.

In any case, the box is on it's way back for RMA.

Please note that FACE module installation is not covered by CompuLab's warranty.
In general, buyers should obtain computers with FACE modules already installed.

Re-capping email and phone conversation: compulab does not support users installing compulab face modules in compulab systems themselves, it is an order-time option only.

While in the regular PC world users can install an extra network card, that's not the case with compulab modules in compulab systems.That's fine if it was communicated beforehand, but it isn't, so I'm posting it here.

(and perhaps, communication should happen in a more customer-facing way - I really don't care for some of the communication I received, but that's a different matter)
