Update Issues

Hello. I am currently using a fit-PC2 with Ubuntu 10.04, and wish to upgrade it to a later distribution. The problem with this is that the fit-PC2 is crashing and freezing whenever it downloads more than one package at a time, and sometimes will crash during the middle of a single-package download.

I'm using 'GV3 Only' (suggested by most posts I've found) and Hyperthreading is currently enabled (disabling hyperthreading didn't help). I see a CPU spike to over 100 percent right before the crash happens thanks to using the 'top' command. What's going wrong and how can I fix it?

Can you please post the steps you perform to upgrade the distribution?

Thanks

At the moment, I have only tried to use the Ubuntu Update Manager. It has completely frozen at the "Setting new software channels" step, on file 17 out of 26, according to what the screen is showing at the moment. Only a hard reboot makes the machine responsive again.

Normally, when I just use the "apt-get install" command and it tries to install a package with dependencies, the computer freezes up on the package download step unless I go through and manually install each individual package (there are a few exceptions where I was able to make a two-package download work, but no more than that) that the item I need is dependent on.

[Edit]
If it helps, I'm seeing download speeds at around 900 kB/s when things freeze up, according to what the machine is telling me.

It seems that there is a software problem, I don't see such problem on my side. Can you please try a fresh Ubuntu copy?
