Unable to log in after update

Suddenly I'm unable to log in after an update. Symptom is that kdm is up and running, but after entering password, screen goes black for a very short time and then kdm is shown again.
Before the update everything ran OK (with the iegd driver). I've noticed that some xorg-intel stuff has been installed/upgraded. Is it possible that this has been caused the issue.
BTW: I can start X with entering startx from the tty login. But in this case I have no network and no sound. So this is no solution...
Anyone else having that issue? Hints are very welcome!
