Mini/Micro SD

Post by RonM »

I'm wondering why the memory card slot on the Fit2 is the Mini-SD format? Here in Canada (and North America in general) the Mini-SD is essentially non-existent. You can't buy a card anywhere I've looked.

The micro-SD is the standard in smaller cards, and they generally come packaged with an adapter for standard SD. At a significant premium you can buy packages with an adapter for Mini-SD, but these are hard to find. The Wikipedia article notes that the Mini-SD format is seldom used.

I imagine the argument is that it was a space issue, and that a Standard SD slot wouldn't have fit, although the form factor isn't that big. Would a micro slot have been too hard to manage?

Aside from such minor irritations, the Fit2 continues to work well for me as a music server with SqueezeCenter installed.

No room for full size SD.
Micro-SD is too small (thin, short travel) for the type of case used in fit-PC2.
Many MicroSD cards are sold with both adapters - to mini/full.

Well, as noted, the miniSD adapter for a micro card is hard to find in Toronto (and I think most places in North America). I've gone to several electronics stores, and micro cards are always packaged with a standard adapter. I haven't yet found one with a mini adapter, have looked at the usual suspects, BestBuy, Circuit City, etc. BestBuy shows them on the web store, but I haven't ordered yet, to see if they have them in stock.

Might not be a bad idea to include a mini adapter with the Fit2 -- probably nominal cost and would be a boon.
