Power Consumption and other questions.

Post by JJOliver »

Hi.

I'm in a very remote area without a whole load of support. I'm looking at an embedded Win XP (pro or home) to hook up to my solar system. I really want something with an incredibly low power consumption. I'm thinking about ordering a fit-pc 2.0 as it seems to fit my requirements.

The pupose of this is to run XP (pro or home) 24/7 to monitor my solar system. I need it to email out as part of the low intensity monitoring software. With everything turned off, such as wifi, display etc accessing only via remote desktop or VNC, and needing the ethernet port on what could I expect the power consumption to be?

Is there a power consumption advantage of fixing the eth speed to 10 rather than 100 or 1000?

Would there be any power savings using a SSD rather than normal spinning disk drive?

The room that it will be situated in can get warm, and I'm in Uganda where I'd expect the temperature to be around 34C. Again is there an advantage of SSD rather than spinning disk drive?

Power resume is not a feature I need? If I ordered today, when could I expect the parts to be shipped and arriving in the UK?

Is there an offered service to install XP on a SSD (capacity really not an issue) rather than the spinning drive?

Warmly

Dear Mr. Oliver,

- I suggest contacting www.fit-pc.co.uk for quick delivery and support in the UK.
- The setup you are suggesting - SSD, no WiFi, no display is optimal and would consume 4-5W. SSD will save power and ensure higher reliability in a hot environment.
