DLNA

Post by benke »

fit-PC2 seems like a wonderful invention! :D
However, I cannot find any references to the new DLNA standard in any of the forum topics, nor in the technical descriptions. I hope it has been implemented? :o

Dear benke,

You appear to be confused about what DLNA means for hardware. If you buy a portable music player, it can be certified as a "Digital Media Player". If you buy a printer, it could be certified as a "Digital Media Printer". If you buy a remote-control it could be certified as a "Digital Media Controller"...

If you buy a computer however, It cannot be certified as anything until you put software on it to make it do something. The link you provided pointed to some further reading you might enjoy, at last100 which includes the following quote:
UPnP AV devices typically either act as a server, meaning that they can stream media to any DLNA certified device, or as a client, in which case they can auto-detect UPnP AV servers on the network to browse and stream media from them. In some cases, a device can offer both server and client functionality, so that it can share as well as receive media, such as a PC with the appropriate software installed.
And then goes on to describe how computers with Windows can use it's networking features and "Windows Media Player" to become a Digital Media Server, and a commenter later shows that there are many Linux products to achieve the same thing, eg: Coherence, FUPPES, GMediaServer, uShare, GeeXboX, MediaTomb

But, on a computer, it is always the software that is providing the features, not the hardware.
