I thinking of buying a fit-PC2i and a Intel X25-M G2 solid state flash disk. Will the 2i be able to make use of the performance of the disk or I'm I better of buying a cheaper/slower flash disk?

The disk controller is PATA (speed up to 133MB/sec). So any speed higher than that will not be utilized.

So when I get my SSD drive, it would be better to hang it off my SATA->USB adapter?

No, USB 2.0 is even slower (60 MB/s max. speed VS 133 MB/s max. speed of PATA). Please refer to effective speeds comparison of all computer interfaces:

Seem like random read/write performance (http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/sh ... i=3607&p=4) is within the range of the maximum throughput of PATA, so it might not be a total waste.
