Recommendation?

I love the idea of this computer and want to hook one up to my 32" Samsung HD TV that I have wall mounted in my kitchen. The idea is to provide a transparent internet capability on the display and home information center for my family.
I plan on installing a wiki and a web server on the box that will provide the "home information center", but I suspect we'll use it for e-mail, internet browsing, etc.
I'm pretty computer literate and have installed many versions of Linux and am a software engineer by profession, so I'm not allergic to installing O/S, updating BIOS, and all the other sys admin type tasks necessary when you're on the bleeding edge.
I saw the fit-PC on Tiger Direct and thought it would fit my needs perfectly, but I'd rather not go with 8.04 of Ubuntu. I'd rather go with 9.10.
Should I get the diskless version, buy an HD, and do the install dance myself or am I just begging for all kinds of issues and driver updates?
The 9.10 instructions look simple, just wanted to make sure that this was a "known good path" to take. If so, I'm ordering mine today!
Thanks
