Recommendation?

Post by rlauer6 »

I love the idea of this computer and want to hook one up to my 32" Samsung HD TV that I have wall mounted in my kitchen. The idea is to provide a transparent internet capability on the display and home information center for my family.

I plan on installing a wiki and a web server on the box that will provide the "home information center", but I suspect we'll use it for e-mail, internet browsing, etc.

I'm pretty computer literate and have installed many versions of Linux and am a software engineer by profession, so I'm not allergic to installing O/S, updating BIOS, and all the other sys admin type tasks necessary when you're on the bleeding edge.

I saw the fit-PC on Tiger Direct and thought it would fit my needs perfectly, but I'd rather not go with 8.04 of Ubuntu. I'd rather go with 9.10.

Should I get the diskless version, buy an HD, and do the install dance myself or am I just begging for all kinds of issues and driver updates?

The 9.10 instructions look simple, just wanted to make sure that this was a "known good path" to take. If so, I'm ordering mine today!

Thanks

9.10 is now mature enough on fit-PC2. Most users following the installation instructions report successful installation with no issues.

Great! Given the fact that the version with the HD is just $20US more I think I'll get that and replace the HD later if I need more storage. Any problem wiping 8.04 on the stock version and replacing with 9.10 rather than going diskless and installing my own from scratch?

I'm planning on pairing this with an Adesso 2.4Ghz wireless keyboard w/mousepad and hook it up to my Samsung HD TV via the DVI port. Do you foresee any issues with that configuration?

The instruction on the wiki cover upgrading from 8.04 to 9.10
As long as the wireless keyboard identifies as a standard HID there should be no problem.
With some TVs there is some adjustment of xorg.conf required to get it working at the requested resolution.

Just got my fit-pc2 and I've hooked it up to the adesso wireless keyboard and my Samsung 32" TV. Posting this message from the setup now! Things look good!
