Just tried to install FreeBSD on Fit-PC2

Install went well (from the 7.1 install DVD), except the RealTek 8168... Gigabit Ethernet chip doesn't seem to be working with FreeBSD. Off to Fry's to buy a USB to Ethernet adapter...

Linksys USB200M works fine with FreeBSD, and we're rocking and rolling now. Cool!

I tried a $10 one (Trendnet TU-ET100C), and it worked, but FreeBSD saw it only as 10Base-T, not 100Base-T, so I took it back.

I am interested in using one of these with FreeBSD as well. Network is primary importance for me. Can you give me the relevent output from 'pciconf -lv' and /var/log/messages? Here's an example of what I'm looking for...

Unfortunately, I am not near the machine now, and the output from pcoconf -lv and contents of /var/log/messages contain no references to the Realtek 8168/8111 chip. As I recall it was detected upon bootup, and generated an error when it couldn't reset the chip or recognize it or something, but the current dmesg contains no references to it, either. Also, no mention of it in ifconfig -a, either--I thought it was in there when I was flailing around before getting the USB Ethernet adaptor. I am pretty ignorant of things Linux, though--any other ideas?

PS from last message: The Vr1: is the working USB adapter, of course. Not sure why it lists Vr1 through Vr3.

The solution is named FreeBSD 7.2. Please see the Release Notes.

This is great news marquz! I had expected that a fix would come along eventually... and if by "eventually" we mean "before I can order one" that's doubly good news! ^_^

So... I know it says it supports the chip now... but have you actually tried it? These products have not been released for distribution in the USA yet, so that lets me out. :/

Downloading the 7.2 DVD image now--I'll try it on my Fit-PC2 and let you know.

Upgraded to 7.2 over the Internet, and unfortunately, No Joy on the internal Ethernet (RealTek), sorry.

Well, there was some improvement, actually--now ifconfig -a at least sees the interface are re0:, but it always shows it as Status = no carrier.

Is there some new driver I have to install separately, maybe?

oh well. little steps. It's a software issue, and I'm sure they'll get it eventually, and I can use the ubuntu install until FreeBSD works.
