Built in COM ports and Linux

Has ANYONE been able to get the built in COM ports to work under Linux? All I want is a login prompt. I can get the middle one (which appears to be "port 0") to work fine on booting up Linux during the GRUB phase - both input and output work.
But once I get the full image running - be it Linux Mint off a USB stick, or a "Linux From Scratch" system I built - I just can't get ANY of them to respond. They seem to be there, but they don't respond. I assign them various flow control options, just failures all the time.
I know the comm port (the one for S0 at least) works because GRUB is able to bring up a menu.
Anyone - ever - successfully get the serial ports to work in a fully running Linux?
