Problems with temperature

Post by daz »

Hi

I just got my fitlet-XA10-LAN Barebone and installed pfsense on it.
I had to disable powerD or it would just constantly reboot.

Just having it on without anything running (cpus are idle) I still get it so hot that I can almost burn myself on it.
Is this for real or have I done something wrong here?

I run the old fitpc2 with pfsense already and that one is not nearly as hot as this one is.

Compulab does not support pfSense and we do not have much experience with it.

Apparently the powerD stability issue may not be related to heat, since enabling it should reduce power.

fitlet-XA10 may run hot in some scenarios. I cannot tell how well pfSense power management is optimized for the system, the powerD issue may indicate a problem in that respect.

Several things may be worth trying -
- Install a supported OS like Linux Mint for the sake of power/heat comparison
- If power management through the OS is not satisfactory, you can control TDP from BIOS
- You can still get much better performance with fitlet-XA10 compared to fit-PC2i at the same power.
- Compulab qualified and now manufactures an external heatsink that provides significantly better thermal headroom.
- If none of the above works for you and you find fitlet not suitable for your needs we will accept it for a refund.

I know there are many people wanting this one as a firewall at home or at small offices running pfsense.

Could you please look into that one and get better support for it?
It runs on freebsd 10.1 I think, su by just supporting freebsd you will expand your userbase alot.

Running linux mint or any other dist or even windows is not what I intended for this box and will keep trying with pfsense more.

The powerD issue (reboot loop) is a big problem and if that supports the APM on the chip I don't know yet. Havn't had so much time to look into that yet.

Please support pfsense in the future on this box and fit-pc2i also. Thanks

I will ask our SW team to look into ACPI/FreeBSD-powerD behavior.
Ongoing support for FreeBSD is beyond the scope of our in-house support, unless FreeBSD community is interested in working on that together with us in a similar manner to what we do with Linux Mint.

Start by contacting the freebsd team and see what kind of info they need from you to support the hardware fully.

I don't think they will deny support for it as you mostly use standard stuff.

I have now run the fitlet with Windows 10 x64 for 24h in idle mode.
The box is still almost so hot that I can burn myself on it.
That is a supported OS listen on your site

So there seems to be temp problems with the box itself not related to the OS you run on it.

We intend to support Windows 10 on fitlet but did not publish drivers or recommendations yet.

fitlet is designed to be thermally balanced at 7-8W. With any OS - supported or not - you can force fitlet to be at that range or you can exceed that and have fitlet run hotter.
fitlet heatsink allows fitlet to work cooler at higher power.

As I wrote earlier, if fitlet seems not to meet your needs you may return it.

So how do I force the fitlet to get lower temp if I'm running a not supported OS?
I can't find any info about that and have been looking at the bios to see if there are any settings I can do there.

Have you tried ALPM:

Have you tried lower the processor TDP in BIOS power settings?

Have not looked at it but will do that.

Although I had the box shut off for a while it's still quite warm turned off.
Not nearly so you burn yourself but still hotter than any other computer I've had during all years.
