only 2 of 6 USB2.0 ports work after recovery from suspend

Post by parsifal9 »

Hi all,

the heading pretty well says it all. When the fitpc4 comes back from a power "suspend" only 2 USB2.0 ports work (one on the front and one on the rear).

The USB3.0 ports both work.

I tried various GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT options before concluding that these were unlikely to have anything to do with the odd pattern of some working and some not working.

is this a known problem? is there a fix.

Bye

We're not familiar with such issue.
I'd suggest to see if re-installing the OS to its latest version may help:

Hi tamir and Forum,

I have upgraded my system from Mint 19.0 to 19.3. The problem persists.
However, I don't think that my initial report was accurate.

1) I loaded every USB with a thumb drive. The "lsusb" output is below
2) suspended the machine and then checked "lsusb" again. All the thumb drive are mounted but the mouse is missing.
The mouse was quite dead with no light (optical mouse)
3) unplugging the mouse and putting it back into the same USB port does not fix it.
4) however the USB port is still alive -- I can put a USB in it and it mounts
5) putting the mouse into another USB will fix it it.
6) however if I suspend again I lose the mouse and the keyboard! This is what confused me before.

so the problem is not that the USB ports die, it is specific to the mouse and then the keyboard.
I think perhaps that this is not a fitpc4 problem. I see posts on the web about mouse and keyboard not recovering after
a suspend i.e.
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1142841 ... end-to-ram
I have tried a few of these remedies but without success so far.

Bye

Please clarify if the below replication steps are correct on a fit-pc4 installed with latest Linux mint:

1. Machine has KB and mouse connected to any USB port.
2. Put the machine into sleep (suspend)
3. Wake up the machine via KB or mouse (works?)
4. Mouse doesn't respond at this point
5. Moving the mouse to another USB port - mouse is now responding
5.1 - If at step 5 instead of moving mouse to alt USB port, you put the machine back into suspend again, when the machine wakes up from either KB or mouse - now both KB and mouse do not respond.
NOTE: A storage thumb drive works on any USB port throughout all steps, the USB ports are actually functional

Question - is the USB thumb drive you're using is USB2.0 or USB3.0 ?

Please clarify the above.

Hi tamir and Forum,

That is all correct, except 5.1. I move the mouse to a working USB port, suspend and then neither mouse or KB are working.

However it seems to depend on which USB port is used and which port the mouse is moved to etc. I can not figure out what is happening. I have recorded which USB port I used etc for one example and run through the sequence a couple of times to make sure that this is exactly what is happening.

1) below is one path through suspending and moving devices.
2) some combinations of devices and USB ports work without a problem. I now have my kbd in B-USB2{1}, mouse in B-USB3{2}, and yubikey in F2. This works OK.
3) The other USB ports all seem to be OK for mounting USB storage thumb drives. I put a thumb drive in very free port and suspended; they were all mounted and accessible afterwards.

I hope this clarifies things.

abbreviations
front USBs -- F1-4
back USB -- B-USB2{1,2} and B-USB3{1,2}

1)I have kdb and mouse in B-USB2{1,2}
2) suspend
3) mouse stops working. It now only works in F2 or B-USB3{1,2}. I move it to F2.
4) suspend
5) mouse not working
KBD not working -- lights are on but it wont type. However, pushing a key woke the machine from suspend
6) move mouse, kdb to B-USB3{1,2} -- they work in these ports
7) suspend
8) everything works

We are trying to replicate the behavior described on a similar system, I'll reply back as soon as I we do.
