Memory compatibility list

Post by opencompany »

Hello.
Could you by any chance post a memory compatibility list for uSVR. A customer is experiencing strange behavior with some Kingston modules, which should work.

Tested with:
2 x Kingston DDR3L 4GB 1600MHz CL11 ECC SO-DIMM (KVR16LSE11/4)
Booting but showing errors in mem-test

1 x Kingston DDR3L 8GB 1600MHz CL11 ECC SO-DIMM (KVR16LSE11/8)
Not booting, but only shows LEDs flashing (from first to last and so on)

The specification states the following:
Up to 32 GB, DDR3, ECC, 1600 MHz, 64-bit (two ECC SO-DIMM sockets)

We would to know if you could be more detailed about memory requirements for uSVR and maybe post a list with tested modules.

Thank you in advance.
Kind Regards,
Kevin Peter Gade

Same memories as in Intense PC case.
Please check on Intense PC and MintBox2 forum - there is such list of memories already.

Hi there.
Thank you for your reply. However since the uSVR requires ECC memory, which Intense PC don't support, the memory support list hardly can be the same?

Yes, sorry my mistake. uSVR memories are not the same as Intense PC and must be with ECC.

My question, which memory modules do one need, if the target size is 32GB?

2x16GB, but which modules?

Thanks,
István

We are interested in finding supported 16GB ECC modules for uSVR as well.

Please also confirm that uSVR can run with 32GB as mentioned in the official specifications:
Memory Up to 32 GB, DDR3, ECC, 1600 MHz, 64-bit (two ECC SO-DIMM sockets).

The Product Highlights on the same page mention:
Dual channel ECC-DDR3 RAM, up to 16GB

Thank you.

In theory it support 32 GB, but technically there is no or at least weren't 16 GB SO-DIMMs on the market.

We have looked into this and actually the issue is not to find 16GB SO-DIMM modules. Intelligent Memory has them however they send us the technical explanation below and apparently the current CPU/BIOS in uSVR does not support 16GB modules.

---
The Compulab board uses a standard i7 processor from Intel. The majority of Intel processors is unable to recognize 16GB memory modules.. There is a software called MRC inside the Intel BIOS which only understands 8GB modules and Intel does not want to change this unfortunately.

This means we can only offer you max 8GB per module.

For 16GB modules, please check the compatibility list:
http://www.intelligentmemory.com/filead ... V03_01.pdf
---
It is not about the maximum "total capacity", but about the DRAM-Chip-capacity the Memory-Reference-Code supports to be addressed.

This MRC code is part of the BIOS. For most Intel CPUs the code only is programmed to identify DRAM-chip sizes of 1 Gigabit, 2 Gigabit, 4 Gigabit. But a 16GB unbuffered DIMM must be built with 8 Gigabit chips.

The MRC software reads out the module specs, finds 8 Gigabit chips and tries to look up the settings in a table. But that table does not contain any 8 Gigabit values, so it hangs.
---

Please correct them/me if this is not right. I am just sharing the answers the send me.

There is definitely a demand for 32GB+ RAM in uSVR.
So hope to see this in later revisions.
