Re: in Win8 , what win7 drivers would i still use?

Definitely install the chipset driver before you do anything else. Without the Intel chipset driver, there are problems recognizing and reading usb flash devices, because the Windows 8 built-in chipset driver finds a device that is not there. You will also need the sound driver from Compulab to get ...

Latest xf86 fbdev gives better performance

You might want to get the source code for the 4.4 version of fbdev_drv.so and compile it for Ubuntu/Mint that uses fbdev or Slackware. Slackware-current with the new version of fbdev is clearly better than 4.3.

Latest version of Mint on the z510

I installed the latest Mint Linux on the Compulab z510, and I have some observations about it. I think that running a video benchmark using its xf86 system can burn out the sound chip, only a suspicion. At any rate, if you read Xorg.0.log, you discover that the Mint designers found a way to use mode...

Using msconfig.exe to discover number of cpus

This tip is supposed to work on Windows 7, but it also works on Windows 8: Basically, you do flag+r and enter msconfig. You select Boot, then "Advanced Options" under "Boot". In the "Advanced Options", there is a dropdown menu entitled "Number of processors" where you can select 1, 2, etc. For the z...

Re: Video acceleration in Linux

I made one last attempt to install Mint Mayo again on my fit-pc2 z510. Something caught my eye as Mint was starting up (minus the --quiet option). There was a thing on the screen about some Mint Linux threads daemon that was adjusting the cpu threads dynamically. So, I ran a series of Peacekeeper Be...

Re: Video acceleration in Linux

I think the problem with the Phoenix bios is that it never worked for the z510 in the first place. The evidence for this is that there are no hyperthreads for the z510, even when hyperthreads are enabled. And, as I have posted elsewhere, if you found a way to set up z510 hyperthreads on the fit-pc2,...

Re: fit-pc2 z510 with two thread support

Somewhere in the source code of the fit-pc2 bios, there is the code for "Enable Hyperthreads". The code checks for the z510 and enables one kind of hyperthreading, and enables dual hyperthreads for the remaining z5xx CPUs. At the Time the Phoenix bios was adapted to the fit-pc2, it was apparently th...

Re: fit-pc2 z510 with two thread support

No need to contact me. I got the latest fit-pc2 1G and 2G bios and put the 2G bios onto the base fit-pc2 z510. It works, but it tells everyone I have 2G of memory, when my system only comes with 1G, and no special hyperthreading. So, I put the 1G bios back onto the system. At the moment, my Phoenix ...

fit-pc2 z510 with two thread support

I think that the M2 bios for the fit-pc2 was written for 2G memory machines, and it implicitly sets the z5xx cpu up for hyperthreading. Hyperthreading is extremely useful, and I am writing this from a non-Compulab z510 with hyperthreading enabled (see below). My experience using a two-thread z510 is...

Re: Video acceleration in Linux

Sorry to post at this hour. Did you know that the fit-pc2 z510 bios can be set up to provide a two-thread z510? I am running on an extremely cantankerous and hard to adjust Habey z510 with 2 G of RAM, BUT I got it to do CPU0 and CPU1 under Linux. And, the results on streaming flash video without the...
