Re: SPDIF and analog audio on the z510
One thing to do until the dust settles: A USB to analog audio dongle to bypass the internal analog and spdif audio entirely has several advantages: It is almost as fast as SPDIF without all the extra wires and the power supply. It shows 30% cpu utilization for streaming flash audio on the z510. Almo...

Windows sound driver causes file corruption
The sound driver available from the fit-pc2 Downloads section causes file corruption that the chkdisk program is not able to fix. I have had reason to install and uninstall the Realtek sound driver, and it causes this file corruption maybe half to two thirds of the Time. That deters me from buying a...

Minor re-wiring suggestion for HDMI compatibility
If you plug the DVI-X into an HDMI device like a modern television set, you get a good picture and a ground loop hum from the HDMI audio circuitry in the television. The reason probably is some kind of open circuit in the fit-pc2 where the digital audio wires ought to be for HDMI. It sounds as if sh...

Re: External heat-sink
I disagree with the external heat sink instructions. On my installation, the heat sink is _underneath_ rather than on top. The rubber footpads are not installed. And, the heat sink grabs onto the ridge at the front of the bottom of the case. Surprisingly, the top of the case is not running hot, even...

Re: Slackware and Slackware derivatives on fit-pc2
To anyone worried about "ground loop hum" in an HDMI television set: According to one of the internet blogs, there is a "handshaking" that goes on to acquire HDMI audio. So, if your HDMI cable into the HDMI input only has DVI-D video, you will get the video on the television, but connecting analog c...

Re: Slackware and Slackware derivatives on fit-pc2
One more thought: Suppose you find exactly the right /etc/asound.conf file that makes the fit-pc2 not do analog sound, but only SPDIF sound. That way, in theory, there is less going on in the CPU and more available for displaying video. So, here is a minimal audio asound.conf file: pcm.!default { ty...

Re: Slackware and Slackware derivatives on fit-pc2
OK, take the fit-pc2 away from my HDMI television set and connect it to my desktop apparatus with the dvi-d monitor and computer speakers. When I connect the SPDIF to analog gadget between the fit-pc2 and the computer speakers, I no longer get the HDMI noise, because the HDMI is to a DVI-D device, a...

Re: Slackware and Slackware derivatives on fit-pc2
OK, here's the scoop for a base fit-pc2 with SPDIF to analog converter tied in to the SPDIF output: alsamixer won't come up without some help in the form of an /etc/asound.conf file. There is a script in alsaland somewhere that makes this asound.conf file "automatically". I think I managed to attach...

Re: SPDIF and analog audio on the z510
One more thing: I think one of the problems with the fit-pc2 is the sound chip, which is a realtek 667 that does not quite handle switching from analog to digital mode easily, especially with the alsa drivers of Linux. I have a DN2700 desktop board with the gma3600 (close to the gma500) and a realte...

Re: Slackware and Slackware derivatives on fit-pc2
I posted information about my base fit-pc2 in the Windows 7 section of these forums. The "magic" resolutions are as follows: 1024x600, 1280x720, and 1360x766. With these resolutions, depending on the monitor used, the psb_gfx driver (minus the poulsbo driver interference) suddenly yields really inte...
