ALPM was already turned on for the measurements I showed. I set the option to lowest.

Unfortunately the sata->usb2 + usb3 solution didn't work, same issue.
An obvious workaround is to connect the usb2.0 to an external power source, but that's not really an option for me.

Luckily Samsung released 2TB SSDs this month, so I'm going to look at those.
