Bigger Inside than Outside?

I was doing a very large download using the Compulab fit pc2 z530 with 1 gigabyte of ram, and typing the 'free' command yielded 82 megabytes of free ram. So, I turned on the web browser, and the 'free' command yielded something like 350 megabytes of free ram. In other words, on distributions like Sl...

See my latest reviews of the z530 and z550 at amazon.com

I am getting streaming video performance on the fit pc2 recently that is unusually good. In particular, flash is working unusually well, on both Linux and Windows 8.1. The Windows 8.1 system with the z530 has enough ram left over to do a single browser and miscellaneous applications. At the moment, ...

Re: Streaming graphics improvements in the latest Linux kern

To avoid the 15-minute screen blanker, disable same in the rc.M file located in the /etc/rc.d directory.

Video Modes in Slackware 14.1 xfce4

The modesetting graphics driver calls the shots in mode setting, and you look into the display settings which lists the available modes from 1920 and on down.

If you want to avoid the mandatory 15 minute screen blanker, you need to check the rc.M file and disable it.

Streaming graphics improvements in the latest Linux kernels

Apparently, the former intellinux Intel division was re--formed into Intel support for i86 versions of the Android operating system. That means professional-looking graphics for the gma500 and gma3600 are finally here, with the fbdev_drv.so driver calling libfb.so trick for older versions of X-Windo...

Re: Slackware 14 doing the peacekeeper benchmark

This libfb.so Xorg graphics driver also enables changing the display resolution, which is a major improvement, given that it does not need fbdev_drv.so at all, and it still uses swrast and does most of what the fbdev_drv.so version does.

Re: Slackware 14 doing the peacekeeper benchmark

Postscript 1: I forgot to mention that the default graphics resolution of the new kernel is 1920x1024x32. In other words, previous kernels had this default resolution at 16 bits, not this one.

Re: Slackware 14 doing the peacekeeper benchmark

I managed to download an installable version of Slackware 14.1 and install it on the z530 with 1 GB of ram. Xorg is now more like the Xorg in the latest Mint, including the missing psb_drv graphics driver. Also, the code has changed significantly so that, if you install fbdev_drv.so, it is loaded in...

Windows 8.1 on the z530 with 1G ram

I followed the instructions for the z550, with the chipset drivers carried over from Windows 8, then re-installed the EMGD and the Windows 7 sound drivers from Compulab. The spare ram is at best 550 to 600 megabytes, and goes down about 150 when Firefox starts, but I got some really good full-screen...

Re: Windows 8.1 on the fit-pc2 z550

Re-did the installation, starting with Windows 8 and downloading Windows 8.1. The chipset driver remained, so that you could find it in the Device Manager. If you go into the Control Panel and search typing in "Performance Options", somewhere before you finish typing, you will get the Windows "8 Per...
