In order to boot/install OS from USB, you will have to change the boot order in BIOS so that the system tries USB before SSD. When I installed Linux on Fitlet, it took a bit of trial and error to adjust the BIOS to boot from USB. Is it possible the mSATA SSD you are using already had VMWARE installe...
