I didn't bother with the video drivers either, I never got them to work with Ubuntu 9.04, so I didn't try with 11.04. It doesn't seem to make much difference.

I have this problem also, and in addition it seems to have a similar problem if it comes out of standby without a monitor attached, but it has usually 'blue-screened' by the time I switch it back on to the monitor. I put it down to the GMA500 chip, but if anyone has a solution I would love to hear it.

I use a FITVGA, as I need to switch between various PCs using a VGA KDM switch. My issue is that while using a FITVGA, I don't see the operating system selection screen, between the intitial boot screens and the Windows screens.
